The Defiant Co-op and Multiplayer: What Is Confirmed
Steam lists online co-op and LAN co-op as supported features. Player counts, maps and rules are unpublished, and the campaign is still single-player.
You can play it with friends, but the only official confirmation is that co-op exists. Steam flags “Online Co-op” and “LAN Co-op” as supported features. How many players join, which maps you play, and whether crossplay works have not been mentioned at all. The campaign itself is still a single-player experience.
What Steam currently flags
| Feature | Steam status | What it actually tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | Listed | The story campaign is built for one player |
| Online co-op | Listed | Co-op exists, details unknown |
| LAN co-op | Listed | LAN play is supported, details unknown |
| Captions | Listed | Subtitles are available |
| Full controller support (incl. Xbox controllers) | Listed | You can play through with a gamepad |
| Family Sharing, stats | Listed | Standard Steam features |
| Competitive PvP | Not listed | Do not treat as confirmed |
| Local split-screen | Not listed | Do not treat as confirmed |
This table only reflects the store flags as they stand today. A flag proves that co-op is supported; it does not prove player counts or mode rules.
Single-player and co-op are two different things
In its hands-on preview, IGN described the game as a story-driven singleplayer shooter. The co-op it reported is a separate PvE concept built on campaign maps and missions, and the team was still working out player counts and match types at the time. Steam later added the co-op flags, which points the same way, but no details followed.
In practical terms: playing the four chapters alone is fine. Playing with friends is confirmed only as “there will be co-op” — not how many players, whether you can drop in mid-mission, or whether it crosses platforms.
What is still unpublished
- The player cap, and whether you can join a session in progress.
- Whether co-op uses maps and missions outside the campaign.
- Whether crossplay is supported.
- Whether a competitive mode exists.
- Whether co-op needs a separate unlock.
Where to watch for co-op news
Start with the feature list and “About This Game” copy on the Steam store page, then the 4Divinity product page. If co-op gets its own announcement, it will normally show up in the Steam news hub too.
